Dr. James Afarin is the NASA Space Communications and Navigation (SCaN) Standard Manager at NASA Headquarters in Washington, DC.
He obtained his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering in 1981 and his master’s degree in control systems in 1989 from the University of Akron in Ohio.
He also obtained his Ph.D. in systems engineering in 1994 from the Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio and is a registered professional engineer.
James has over 34 years of experience in design and development. Prior to coming to NASA, James designed mathematical models for
aircraft wheel and brake systems and recovery systems for underwater vehicles at Loral Defense Systems. He joined NASA over 25 years ago and has served in various
capacities including, Chief of Systems Engineering Branch and Chief of Facility Engineering and Management Branch. He had also led major systems engineering and
integration effort including the Ares I Preliminary Design Review (PDR) and the NASA Constellation program Architectural Description Document (ADD) development.
James joined SCaN in 2009 and became the Standards Manager in 2011.
