Silver Books: Historical - Obsolete

CCSDS Historical designation (Silver Books) is reserved for any approved CCSDS document that has been superseded by a more recent version or is for any other reason considered to be obsolete. More often than not, a CCSDS Historic document will be a CCSDS Recommended Standard that has come to the end of its useful operational life and no longer controls a committed deployment of international CCSDS-compatible mission support infrastructure.

This Recommendation establishes a common framework and provides a common basis for the data structures of spacecraft telemetry streams. The Packet Telemetry concept described is the baseline concept for spacecraft-to-ground data communication within missions that are cross supported between Agencies of the CCSDS. Issue 5 of the CCSDS Packet Telemetry Recommendation adds specifications that allow the CCSDS Version-1 Telemetry Transfer Frame to be used to transport other types of packets in addition to CCSDS Version-1 Packets, including CCSDS Network Protocol (NP) Packets and Internet Protocol (IP) packets. This enhanced functionality is added to the Transfer Frame through the introduction of a standardized approach to interpreting the packet version number field. The format of the Transfer Frame is not changed from the previous issue.

To do so, it establishes a layered model of Packet Telemetry protocols and defines Packet Telemetry Services by specifying the behavior at the service interfaces to each layer. The current issue adds specifications that allow the CCSDS Version-1 Telemetry Transfer Frame to be used to transport other types of packets in addition to CCSDS Version-1 Packets, including CCSDS Network Protocol (NP) Packets and Internet Protocol (IP) packets. This enhanced functionality is added to the Transfer Frame through the introduction of a standardized approach to interpreting the packet version number field. The format of the Transfer Frame is not changed.

The CCSDS Recommended Standard for AOS Space Data Link Protocol specifies the protocol, services, and procedures pertaining to the CCSDS Version-2 Transfer Frame. This Restructured Organization and Processes document was initially created in response to calls to update and re-engineer the CCSDS organization at its autumn 2002 meeting. As a result, "CCSDS RECORD A02.1-Y-1, PROPOSAL FOR RESTRUCTURING THE CCSDS ORGANIZATION AND PROCESSES" was published in March 2003. This document updates A02.1-Y-1 by removing the rationale that led to the reorganization (thus streamlining the new CCSDS working procedures), and also to clarify the differences between "Recommended Standard" and "Recommended Practice" on the Standards track.
