Stefan Gärtner – Deputy Area Director, MOIMS
Stefan Gärtner is the Deputy Area Director of the Mission Operations and Information Management Services Area
(MOIMS).
Stefan Gärtner is currently working as Mission Control & Data Systems Engineer in the Mission
Technology Department at the German Space Operations Centre (GSOC) located in Oberpfaffenhofen.
GSOC is part of the Space Operations and Astronaut Training institution within Deutsches Zentrum für
Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR). He is responsible for development, implementation, deployment,
administration, support and maintenance of Mission Operations system components and software for
satellite missions. Since 2020 he acts as project lead and systems engineer for the V3C project. Being
a mobile mission control center with only minimal requirements to the underlying hardware, V3C
offers completely new possibilities for quick decentral satellite access.
Mr. Gärtner joined DLR in 2013 and since then has been active in the standardisation community and
CCSDS in particular where he has been representing DLR in the Spacecraft Monitor and Control
Working Group (MOIMS-SM&C). He has been a main driver behind the development and validation
of several CCSDS Spacecraft Monitor and Control key standards such as Mission Operations services,
Message Abstraction Layer and technology bindings.
He holds a diploma in physics from Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany. Shortly after starting
his career in the space sector by joining DLR, he has been actively publishing CCSDS-related papers
and articles in conferences and journals to widen the impact of CCSDS in the space community.
